Depending on the therapeutic indication, for example, insulin resistance or overt diabetes, we offer several models to suit your needs. Routinely used genetic models include:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The <em>ob\/ob\u00a0<\/em>mouse<\/strong> \u2013 model of insulin resistance (caused by a mutation in the leptin gene)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The<em> db\/db\u00a0<\/em>mouse<\/strong> \u2013 model of progressive type 2 diabetes (caused by a mutation in the leptin receptor gene)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Zucker fatty\u00a0<em>fa\/fa <\/em>rat<\/strong> \u2013 model of insulin resistance (characterised by deficits in leptin signalling)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sygnaturediscovery.com\/publications\/technical-notes\/the-zdf-rat-model-of-type-2-diabetes\/\">Zucker diabetic fatty fa\/fa (ZDF) rat<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 model of progressive diabetes (characterised by deficits in leptin signalling)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All four models display obesity, hyperphagia, hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance, but differ in the degree of hyperglycaemia.<\/p>\n<p>Below is an example which demonstrates the protective effects of liraglutide (a clinically approved treatment for type 2 diabetes) to attenuate the progressive development of the diabetic phenotype (i.e. weight loss, impaired glucose tolerance, reduced pancreatic insulin).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liraglutide prevents the progressive decline in body weight associated with worsening the type 2 diabetes phenotype in the <em>db<\/em>\/<em>db<\/em> mouse model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10236\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sygnaturediscovery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Liraglutide-prevents-the-progressive-decline-in-body-weight-associated-with-worsening-the-type-2-diabetes-phenotype-in-the-dbdb-mouse-model.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liraglutide improves glucose tolerance in the <em>db<\/em>\/<em>db<\/em> mouse model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10237\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sygnaturediscovery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Liraglutide-improves-glucose-tolerance-in-the-dbdb-mouse-model.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liraglutide increases pancreatic insulin content in the <em>db<\/em>\/<em>db<\/em> mouse model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sygnaturediscovery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Liraglutide-increases-pancreatic-insulin-content-in-the-dbdb-mouse-model.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Examples of standard readouts used in our genetic models of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Glucose tolerance tests (ivGTT, ipGTT or oGTT)<\/li>\n<li>Blood HbA1c<\/li>\n<li>Plasma biochemistry (e.g. fructosamine, cholesterol, HDL-C and LDL-C)<\/li>\n<li>Urinary glucose excretion<\/li>\n<li>Pancreatic insulin quantification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Explore our genetic models of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
